Sights & Sounds Weekly: 4/28/16

David Martin
Musician/Conductor, Pete Nowlen with his dog, Buddha

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. Our guest is Pete Nowlen: an orchestral and chamber musician, and the Artistic Director of the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band (SFLGFB).  SFLGFB presents a Broadway tune sing along concert and fundraiser on May 14th.

Nowlen told KALW’s Jen Chien about three cool arts events happening this week around the Bay.

The San Francisco Unified School District present its annual Arts Festival at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. The nine-day festival, celebrating student creativity starts today, 4/28, and runs through Friday, 5/6. This year’s lineup includes a visual art exhibit, hands-on art activities, a media arts/filming showing, a literary arts event, and choral, band, dance, and drama performances by more than 80 student and community groups.

NOWLEN: The product of the efforts of these young people and their incredibly dedicated teachers needs to be brought to a wider audience. It’s a necessary next step to building those programs.

San Francisco Ballet in Cranko's Onegin

The San Francisco Ballet presents Onegin starting Sunday, 4/30, and running through Sunday, 5/8. Choreography for Onegin is by John Cranko based on the Alexander Pushkin novel, Eugene Onegin, about unrequited love. The Russian tale is set to a score of Tchaikovsky compositions from an opera of the same name.

NOWLEN: Cranko is a great storyteller through dance. There will be amazing dance by the SF Ballet, but it’ll also be dressed in a beautiful production.

Baseball in the Movies, sponsored by the San Rafael Pacifics, runs Sundays until 5/29. Baseball in the Movies is a program of baseball-themed films showing at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael. Moneyball, about the Oakland A’s, is showing this Sunday, 5/1. In the film, Oakland A's General Manager Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt) rebuilds his team by recruiting good but overlooked players after losing three stars to free agency in the team’s off season.

NOWLEN: This is a time in the baseball season that’s full of potential, and this is a great way to celebrate the sports season in the arts.
