Playwright, Lauren Gunderson

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. Our guest is Lauren Gunderson: author and co-writer of the play Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberly opening at Marin Theatre in November.

Gunderson told KALW’s Jen Chien about three cool arts events happening this week around the Bay.

Jennifer Lim (Cornelia), Tim Kang (Ray), Sab Shimono (Ray’s father), and Joseph Steven Yang (Uncle) in Julia Cho’s Aubergine at Berkeley Rep.

Until Sunday, 3/27, Aubergine is on the Berkeley Repertory Theatre stage. Julia Cho’s play about an estranged son, his dying father, and other character studies, shows love and loss through the intersection of family and food.

GUNDERSON: It’s really sophisticated and beautiful — one of those you can’t miss with.

Priya (Jolly Abraham), Tom (Aaron Roman Weiner) & Randy (Max Rosenak) looking out their office window at some fire trucks that pulled up across the street in front of another building.

Swimmers, a play by Rachel Bonds, is at the Marin Theatre Company until Sunday, 3/27. This comedic, day- in-the-life look at 11 co-workers starts in the basement of an office building, and the action moves up one floor in each successive scene.

GUNDERSON: This one is odd and funny and slightly apocalyptic.

Tonight, 3/24, through Sunday, 3/37, the all-star Cuban orchestra ¡Cubanismo! plays at SF Jazz Center. Led by trumpet player Jesus Alemany, ¡Cubanismo! is a big band whose horns, rhythm, and percussion sounds recall 40’s and 50’s style rumba, cha-cha, and other Cuban music traditions.

GUNDERSON: [The music] just makes you want to dance, it makes you want to clap, you can’t help but move in your seat a little.
