Rent-controlled units are now more abundant in San Francisco than in New York

“San Francisco’s homes have surpassed those in New York City as the priciest to rent among the nation’s largest cities, but it’s actually easier to find a rent-controlled unit in The City than in Manhattan

 

"That’s according to a report released Thursday by San Francisco-based real estate website Trulia, which tracked rent-controlled and rent-stabilized housing units in The City and Manhattan to determine how rent regulations stack up in each metropolis.”

2,500-acre blaze burning east of Livermore // SF Gate

 

“Firefighters were battling a 2,500-acre blaze that broke out Wednesday afternoon between Livermore and Tracy, officials said.

 

“The fast-growing vegetation fire was reported at 2:45 p.m. near Tesla and Corral Hollow roads. As of 8:30 p.m., one building — an unoccupied residence — had been destroyed in the rural area south of Interstate 580. Cal Fire is calling it the Tesla Fire because it began near Tesla Road.”

Swarms of bugs infest the playa ahead of Burning Man // SF Gate

 

“It seems burners aren't the only ones eager to set up camp at Black Rock City this year. The playa is already swarming with creepy, crawly, biting bugs.

 

From the official Burning Man blog:

 

‘You may have seen the bug rumors on the internet. We are here to tell you that they are all true. Well maybe not all of the rumors, but the bugs are real. They're everywhere. They bite. They crawl all over you. They get up and in you.’”

Daly City takes next step to restrict tobacco // SF Examiner

 

“Daly City’s elected officials recently moved to amend the town’s already-strict smoking ordinance to further restrict the sale, distribution and use of tobacco products.

 

“In a unanimous vote, the City Council agreed to prohibit the sale of tobacco products at pharmacies, prevent tobacco product sellers from offering free samples and expand the city’s second-hand smoke restriction to include sidewalks adjacent to apartment buildings, places of employment and other public spaces.”

San Jose School issues student body card to campus cat // ABC7 News

 

“A local cat is now an official member of a high school in San Jose.

 

“The cat was adopted by a family that lives behind the school back in 2009. It was around that time that he first appeared on campus. Bubba is also in the school's yearbook and has a Facebook page with more than 700 followers.”

Bay Area housing enjoying busiest summer since downturn // SF Business Times

 

“Slightly lower home prices in the East Bay and Silicon Valley and higher demand for inland counties gave the Bay Area its highest July sales numbers since the downturn.

 

“A report by industry tracker CoreLogic counted 6,765 single-family home sales across the nine-county region. It found the busiest summer for home sales in Contra Costa and Alameda counties since 2005. Inland counties Contra Costa, Napa and Solano showed the biggest sales increases.”
