Actor/Performer, Lisa Hori-Garcia

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. Our guest is Lisa Hori-Garcia: a Bay Area actor, performer, and member of the San Francisco Mime Troupe (SFMT). The SFMT’s Youth Theater Project celebrates its 20th anniversary with performances on 4/30 and 5/1.

Hori-Garcia told KALW’s Jen Chien about three cool arts events happening this week around the Bay.

Abasiama (Katherine Turner) and Ukpong (Jarrod Smith) negotiate their new life in America.

Sojourners is at the The Magic Theatre in San Francisco until Sunday, 5/8.  Written by MfonisoUdofia, the play follows a newlywed woman struggling with her plans to return to Nigeria after studying in America. Sojourners is a part of a nine-play cycle about one Nigerian family and will run in repertory with Udofia’srunboyrun.

HORI-GARCIA: I’m really excited to see these plays in this way. It’s very rare nowadays when you get to see shows like this.

A House Tour of the Infamous Porter Family Mansion with Tour Guide Weston Ludlow Londonderry is at Z Space in San Francisco’s Mission District until Saturday, 4/23. In this one-man play, Londonberry (played by Danny Scheie) guides audience members through the odd and installation- filled abode of Hubert and Clarissa Porter, a wealthy and eccentric couple.

HORI-GARCIA: He’s the most abnormal sort of tour guide that you would ever have. The playwright and actor have transformed the entire theater and created something really special.

The Great American Music Hall hosts three movement inspiring bands Wednesday, 4/20. The brass and rhythm heavy FogDub, is joined by string band The Human Condition, and Trainwreck Riders who play punk and country infused rock.

HORI-GARCIA: How can you not dance to this?
