Senior citizens do physical therapy at the Glendale Gardens Adult Day Health Care center in Glendale, Calif. Senior health care benefits could come to an end if proposed budget cuts are carried out to help reverse California's $28 billion deficit

Patricia McGinnis, executive director of California Advocated for Nursing Home Reform, discusses the problems in the nursing care industry.

We shouldn't have a for-profit healthcare system. It doesn't work. You're always going to be answerable to your investors and to your own pocket. And not to the residents that you're serving.

McGinnis cofounded California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform in 1983.

I joined KALW in 2003. As Executive News Editor and then News Director, I helped our news department win numerous regional and national awards for long- and short-form journalism. I've also helped create numerous training programs — for teenagers, incarcerated people, and early-career journalists — and have taught hundreds of audio producers. I served as interim Executive Director for nearly two years. My work is currently focused on creating original live events, programming, and building partnerships with like-minded organizations.
