'Tales of the City' for a new San Francisco
Armistead Maupin’s 'Tales of the City' began as a serial fiction column in the San Francisco Chronicle. So far it has spawned nine novels and three TV miniseries. And this weekend, Netflix is launching a new 'Tales of the City' miniseries.
Twenty-five years ago, the original made-for-PBS series included the first man-on-man kiss on American television. That series was set in the dreamy, disco-infused San Francisco of the 1970s. This time, instead of being a nostalgia trip, it’s set in the San Francisco of now. For the show's creative team that presented a challenge: how do you honor the bohemian, optimistic DNA of the original while addressing the city's current homelessness crisis and staggering inequalities? We found out recently, when we sat down with them.
