LEGALIZATION        

U.N. urges new look at several drugs// NYT      “The proposal by the group, the Global Commission on Drug Policy, goes beyond its previous call to abandon the nearly half-century-old American-led war on drugs.”

“Marijuana needs to be legalized,” says GOP candidate for A.G. // Marijuana.com      Republican Ron Gold calls for legalization and taxation, while the current California Attorney General, Democrat Kamala Harris, tries to avoid the issue.

Sheriff says it’s safe to hike in Mendo Forest // SF Weekly   Federal raids have cleared out the Latino drug operations on public land in Mendocino County, says Sheriff Tom Allman. Where did they go? Fresno, according to the California Water Boards.

“Recreational” tax revenue doubles in a month in Washington State // Marijuana Business Daily   And recreational cannabis sales in Colorado surpass medicinal sales.

Drug test failures in Washington increase by nearly 25% // Puget Sound Business Journal     “Washington and Colorado are believed by many to foreshadow future trends in ‘recreational’ marijuana use,” says testing firm.

Study: Adolescent use of cannabis shows adverse outcomes //The Lancet.com   “Prevention or delay of cannabis use in adolescence is likely to have broad health and social benefits,” including a better likelihood of graduating from school.  [This is news? – Ed.]

David Downs blasts Lancet “teen smoking” report // East Bay Express  “The study [cited above] is loaded with problems, and comes with weak conclusions from the researchers.”

Why is pot “zero tolerance” when alcohol isn’t? // NYT        “There is no evidence that marijuana smokers are less focused on their job than casual drinkers.”

EVENTS

420 Games” celebrate “positive cannabis users” //  www.420games.org       “Participants are not stoners,” says founder, and he stresses this is not a smoke-in, like the April “420” events. He wants to “set a standard of ethics and protocol for responsible use.” Sunday’s “fun run” starts at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell in San Francisco.  Some restrictions (and an entry fee) apply.

It was 100 years ago… // canorml.org      The first known U.S. raid on “Indian hemp – called marahuana here” took place in Los Angeles a century ago this week. A party to mark that event will be held in the City of Angels tomorrow (09.13).  A press conference yesterday called for the end of what organizers label “the 100-Year War on Pot.”

Greenhouse grown” awards set for Saturday // Manteel Comm. Ctr.                 Some growers find that light deprivation causes plants to bud sooner, which cuts down expenses and getting the crop to market sooner. Redway, near Humboldt Redwoods State Park, will be the site of the first awards for this method, September 13.
