Sights & Sounds: JWalt's Picks

Ryan Corr
Oakland rapper Jwalt

Sights and Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. During shelter-in-place, instead of recommending in-person events, we're recommending ways to experience art and culture from home. This week, host Jenee Darden speaks with Oakland hip-hop artist JWalt.

Oakland native and Grammy award-winning musician Fantastic Negrito has been keeping it real on Instagram throughout this pandemic, with live performances, discussions of social justice and even gardening tips with images from his own beautiful garden. Check out his music video about the pandemic called Chocolate Samurai.

With kids stuck at home, varsitytutors.com is offering a vast selection of free online courses ranging from math and science to podcast producing and origami. It's a great way for kids from 4th to 12th grade to keep up with their school work and learn new, fun skills.

If you have a Netflix account, check out this fantastic documentary about two LA artists, Estevan Oriol and Mr. Cartoon, whose artwork has had a dramatic impact on hip hop culture. If you love hip hop, you'll probably see some of your favorite musicians discussed in this entertaining and informative film.
Jwalt's debut album is Yours Truly.
