Sights and Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. This week, Jenee Darden sat down with visual artist Elisheva Biernoff to talk about three events going on over Halloween weekend.

Grace Cathedral is a beautiful space, and it will be transformed into a theatre for this special sceening of the classic 1920 silent film Dr. Jeckyl and Mr Hyde. To add to the fun, it will be accompanied by a live score by organist Dorothy Papadakos on the cathedral's pipe organ. Starting at 7 p.m., it will be a unique and fun way to celebrate Halloween!

SF Films Doc Stories film series brings short documentaries to the Bay Area, and on Saturday a block of shorts about adults who are making a difference in children’s lives whether at home, in the their communities or abroad, promises to be fascinating. In one short, A Childhood on Fire, a father writes notes of encouragement to his sons, trying to use the lessons he has learned from his own difficult childhood and painful experiences with toxic masculinity. This series starts at 1 p.m. at the Vogue Theatre. Be sure to check out their other films.

Nigel Poor began voluntarily teaching photography and its history at San Quentin back in 2011. Her exhibition The San Quentin Project features work that was born out of that experience. Her students did a mapping exercice where they analyzed photos by well-known artists and prison employees , then creatively interpreted their meanings. The exhibit runs until Nov 17th at BAMPFA, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.

See Elisheva Biernoff’s artwork in the Long Story Short exhibit, at the Fraenkel Gallery for their 40th anniversary. That exhibit wraps in January of 2020.
