Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. Our guest is Trinidad Escobar: poet and cartoonist whose work is in the Kwentóhan Komiks exhibit at the International Hotel Manilatown Center in San Francisco until April 17th.
Escobar told KALW’s Jen Chien about three cool arts events happening this week around the Bay.
Parables of the Future is at the Live Worms Gallery in San Francisco on Saturday, 2/27, and Sunday, 2/28. This is an interactive performance event that brings together choreography, music, poetry, and the science of time travel. It’s part of the week-long exhibit Octavia’s Attic: ARTifacts From Our Possible Futures-- honoring the legendary science fiction writer Octavia Butler.

On Saturday, 2/27, Impact Hub in Oakland hosts Breaking The Silence Town Hall on Girls & Women of Color. This event marks the conclusion of six months of “artivist” (artist + activist) programming called “the conjure circle” series. Young girls and women will be speaking about displacement, education, interpersonal and inter-communal violence, and criminalization.
ESCOBAR: It’s so important to see the beautiful art being made right now. It’s art that celebrates blackness and directly challenges and fights against what’s happening.
Also on Saturday, 2/27, The American Center of Philippine Arts and Kariktan Dance Company jointly present Padayon: Pride & Perseverance. This concert features traditional Philippine cultural dance and music and takes place at the Village Theatre and Art Gallery in Danville.
ESCOBAR: Dance is something that is much more than pretty or beautiful. It’s an entire experience that is transmitted instantly.
