Sabrina McFarland grew up in Visitacion Valley. She lived in a neighborhood where violence was a part of daily life. When she was just six, she started going to the neighborhood Boys & Girls Club.
"My favorite thing was definitely dance. I still dance to this day. It really gave me a way to tell my story through movement. You know, sometimes it can be hard to speak your truth through words."
Over the years, it would become her refuge — her home away from home, where she’d play, study, and learn life skills. She would eventually start mentoring and volunteering there, and then she went on the be named National Youth of the Year, an award that comes with a one hundred thousand dollar college scholarship. Sabrina spoke about her journey and where she is now.
