San Francisco International Hip Hop DanceFest celebrates 20 years

Georgia Simian
Versa-Style Dance Company

In the early '90s, San Francisco dance instructor and choreographer Micaya began producing hip-hop dance shows in the city’s Mission District. The shows originally featured local dance crews from throughout the Bay Area and by 1999 would grow to become the San Francisco International Hip Hop Dance Fest.

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the festival has earned an international reputation as one of most prestigious showcases for hip-hop dance.

"This festival has wings on it and as long as it continues to fly, I'm honored to try to help it."

This weekend the Palace of Fine Arts will host the three-day event which is set to feature 14 different professional dance companies from around the globe. Micaya recently stopped by KALW to reflect on the past 20 years and discuss her original idea of bringing hip-hop dance to the stage.

You can check out the San Francisco International Hip Hop DanceFest this weekend at the Palace of Fine Arts in the city.
