Writers Respond to Trump: Woman standing in line at the grocery store

Last week, some of the Bay Area’s most celebrated authors came together to share their thoughts about what the Donald Trump presidency means for the country. The event, presented by Litquake, was called “No Shadow Without Light: Writers Respond to Trump.” KALW was there to capture some of those responses. Arab-American poet, performer, and Mills College professor Elmaz Abinader read from an excerpt from a letter she wrote called Woman Standing in Line at the Store.

ABINADER: I cannot fathom riding the boats that carried you, waving goodbye to my grandmother, paying the man who forged the papers, begging the minister to sign the visa, sneaking to the train holding my child.
