Talking blackness and identity with Bay Area collective Blank Map

Tasha Ceyan and Brontez Purnell are members of Blank Map, a Bay Area collective of queer Black artist-performer-musicians. They describe their collaborative work as “Black abstractions influenced by punk, queer, and feminism.”

Ceyan and Purnell spoke to KALW’s Jen Chien about making art that embodies blackness without being about blackness.

TASHA CEYAN: Things are gonna come at you, you're gonna be asked to speak for everybody else, and you're most likely gonna fail because you cannot do that.

You can see Blank Map this weekend at Dance Mission in San Francisco, Friday through Sunday. Show starts at 8pm. Find tickets here.
