City Preparing to Close Pier 80 Homeless Shelter // SF Weekly

“San Francisco's temporary homeless shelter at Pier 80 just below Dogpatch is set to close July 1, when a two-month extension expires.

A San Francisco lawmaker has had enough of the Blue Angels ‘strafing’ his city // Washington Post

“A San Francisco lawmaker has revived a proposal following the crash of a Blue Angels jet last week: It’s time, he said, to ban the renowned Navy squadron from flying over his city.

“John Avalos, a member of the board of supervisors, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the jets are a threat to safety and should not be allowed to fly over occupied areas. Rather, he said, they should be kept over San Francisco Bay, where sea vessels typically congregate for Blue Angels performances.”

“A Santa Clara County judge’s decision to sentence a former Stanford University swimmer to a relatively light six months in jail for the sexual assault of a drunken and unconscious woman at a fraternity party has sparked national outrage and a online campaign to remove him from the bench.

“Victims’ rights advocates have called Judge Aaron Persky’s punishment last week of 20-year-old Brock Allen Turner a slap on the wrist, while becoming further angered over the weekend by a statement from the swimmer’s father, downplaying the attack as ‘20 minutes of action.’”

Amid discrimination backlash, Airbnb says it wants more minorities, women at HQ // East Bay Times

“As controversy swirls around Airbnb over allegations of racial discrimination on its home-sharing platform, the company is looking inward to address another problem all-to common in Silicon Valley -- a lack of diversity in the workplace.

“On Monday the company announced Airbnb Connect, a Bay Area program focused on opening careers in engineering and data science to minorities, women, veterans and other groups underrepresented in the technology sector. Airbnb will select 11 candidates to participate in the six-month program that combines education and paid work at the company's San Francisco headquarters, with the goal of ultimately offering participants full-time jobs.”

“The piglets were born on May 6 and May 13 to warthogs Frenchie and Alice. Both sows are first-time moms, according to zoo staff, and are being very protective of their litters.”
