Where is East Oakland Documentary

Where Is East Oakland documentary

KALW News collaborative Hey Area invites our listeners to ask any question about the Bay Area. Then our reporters find the answer. One of the most popular questions we received is "What are the boundaries of East Oakland?" KALW East Oakland reporter Jenee Darden hit the pavement and learned that answer is more than geography.

In Where is East Oakland, Darden takes you on a journey from Downtown to the Fruitvale District and into Deep East Oakland.  She explores the city's history and culture through conversations with local leaders, artists and activists to figure out East Oakland's boundaries.

Where is East Oakland was written by Jenee Darden and directed by Zoë Mountain. The film was a 2019 short-documentary selection for the 2019 Oakland International Film Festival

Jeneé Darden is an award-winning journalist, author, public speaker and proud Oakland native. She is the executive producer and host of the weekly arts segment Sights & Sounds as well as the series Sights + Sounds Magazine. Jeneé also covers East Oakland for KALW. Jeneé has reported for NPR, Marketplace, KQED, KPCC, The Los Angeles Times, Ebony magazine, Refinery29 and other outlets. In 2005, she reported on the London transit bombings for Time magazine. Prior to coming to KALW, she hosted the podcast Mental Health and Wellness Radio.
