How The Pandemic Is Causing A Rise Of Homicides In Oakland

Dec 7, 2020

For the first time since 2012, Oakland has reached over 100 cases. Oakland native Glen Upshaw is a violence interrupter. He and his team peacefully resolve conflicts in the community. Upshaw shares why he thinks there has been a rise in killings in 2020.

"I need to be able to get these guys jobs. I think that would be a start at changing things and getting youth on the right path."

Upshaw is the leader of Youth ALIVE!’s Violence Interruption team. Sometimes, people in the community call Upshaw and his team, before the police when there's conflict. Glen is someone who brings a lot of experience to mediations as someone who committed crimes in the past, and lost loved ones to violence.
