On this edition of Your Call, we’ll speak with Native American historian Nick Estes about his new book Our History is the Future.
He writes about how the 2016 protest encampment at the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, initially established to stop the Dakota Access oil pipeline, became the largest Indigenous protest movement in the 21st century. He also explores the history of two centuries of native resistance. He writes, “As colonialism changes throughout time, so too does resistance to it.”
Guest:
Nick Estes, assistant professor of American studies at the University of New Mexico and author of Our History is the Future: Standing Rock Versus the Dakota Access Pipeline, and the Long Tradition of Indigenous Resistance.
