Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. Nathan Tan is a fashion designer, artist, and owner of the clothing company New Skool, and he told KALW’s Bo Walsh about three fantastic arts events happening around the Bay this weekend.

 Dilla Day 2019is the annual celebration of life in honor of the late hip hop producer J Dilla.Resident DJ’s Shortkut & Mr. E,  as well as special guest Mr. Chocwill be playing Dilla beats throughout the night. This event is hosted by 15 Utah and being held at the Great Northernin San Francisco.
 

"It’s hard to carve out your own niche in hip hop producing, few producers have done that, but J Dilla’s beats to me were just raw, and funky, and dope samples."

Credit Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade

The 2019 Year of the Pig Chinese New Year Parade is happening this Saturday in San Francisco’s Chinatown. This is the biggest parade celebrating the Lunar New Year outside of Asia and this year there are slated to be over 100 different merchants and community organizations participating. There will be a community fair, flower market, youth basketball tournament along with the annual Miss Chinatown Pageant. Ticketsare required to attend the Parade.

Credit Mission Skateboards

San Francisco’s Mission Skateboards will be hosting Holding It Down, a group art show with live music. The show will feature an exhibition of old school and new skool graffiti artists.  It starts at 6 pm this Friday 2/22.

It’s showcasing some younger artists as well as some that have been in the game for thirty-plus years.
