Dancer, Spulu

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. Spulu, dancer and choreographer, told KALW’s Jen Chien about three cool arts events happening around the Bay this weekend:

Until 8/25 the Associated Students Art Gallery at San Francisco State University is accepting submissions for the Being Pacific exhibit. Any artist who identifies as Pacific Islander can respond to the call for art and submissions can be in in any medium.  Being Pacific opens 10/13.

SPULU: Normally collectors take from our islands and showcase it, but this is a different approach; Pacific Islanders are able to share their own stories.

PUSH Dance Company’s PUSH Lab performance workshops start this Friday, 8/19. In two 6-week sessions that end in performance, students learn technique and choreography with Raissa Simpson, Katerina Wong, Ashley Gayle and Noah James. Classes are held at the Alonzo King Lines Dance Center in San Francisco and performances happen during PUSHfest at ODC Theater.

SPULU: A lot of the work is abstract and connected to social issues- they definitely use intuitive thought in their process.

Swagger Like Us, Your Queer Hip-Hop Dance Party is Friday, 8/19 at Oasis in San Francisco. The party started by Kelly Lovemonster and DJ davOmakesbeats, alternates venues and this time features Chicago- based Drill music artist Sasha Go Hard.

SPULU: They’re bringing in underground and mainstream, hip-hop, queer artists who have some musical influence in rap lyrics, djing, dance, and fashion.
