Remembering Bonnie Pointer

Pointer sisters Bonnie, Anita, and Ruth.

Bonnie Pointer, one of the founding members of Oakland's legendary Pointer Sisters, died yesterday, at 69 years old. After years singing choir music in their home town, Bonnie and her sister June started performing in San Francisco in 1969. When their sister Anita joined them soon after, they made music history.

The Pointer Sisters wrote and performed songs inspired by the revolutionary Bay Area scene half-a-century ago. After another sister, Ruth, joined the group, they made a record “That’s A Plenty,” featuring this song “Love In Them There Hills.”

Bonnie Pointer moved on to a solo career. In 2009, Ruth Pointer told Pop Matters:

"Bonnie's always had a particular following. She was the spunkiest of us all; she was the shortest of us all. We would all be at the hotel asleep and Bonnie would be out in the street, partying with the fans. They loved them some Bonnie, honey!"

You can hear why.
