Oakland Unified teachers and staff are joined by students and community members during a Jan. 12, 2019 rally and march to demand higher pay and more supports for students.

Members of the Oakland teachers union just voted to authorize a strike. The school board voted to close the first of what it expects will be a number of schools — to help keep costs down. These are tough times for Oakland Unified.

"I think that while they want the best for students, they don't realize that the teachers and the educators in this district are ready to lay it all on the line to fight for what our students deserve." - Chaz Garcia, elementary school teacher.
