ASTU

With the 2018 release of her debut album “Patterns”;  Eritrean-American singer and songwriter ASTU explores her experiences of love, redemption and black womanhood. The songstress’ path has taken her from being a former minister in Oklahoma all the way to finding a new sense of self and belonging in the city of Oakland.

Eritrean-American Oakland based singer ASTU began her journey with music at the age of five singing gospel as the daughter of Christian Ministers. With the 2018 release of her debut album “Patterns”;  the songstress explores her experiences of love, redemption, and black womanhood. In this edition of Bay Area beats; Astu tells her story of the path that has taken her from being a former minister herself in Oklahoma all the way to finding a new sense of identity and belonging in the city of Oakland.

"When I came to Oakland I had no idea that I could be accepted for who I was, and not only that, but celebrated for who I was. As a black woman, it was revolutionary for me."

You can catch ASTU in concert this Saturday, August 4th at the Swedish American Music Hall in San Francisco. The show starts at 8pm.
