New chief Anne Kirkpatrick aims to straighten out the Oakland Police Department

Anne Kirkpatrick, Oakland's newest Police Chief

Earlier this year, Anne Kirkpatrick became Oakland's newest police chief. Kirkpatrick’s got a Southern twang and change maker cred, having just left her job leading reform efforts at the Chicago police department. But some are skeptical that any one chief can change a department rocked by scandal for so long.

Kirkpatrickdescribed herself as a courageous leader and a supporter of procedural justice, a type of policing that aims to improve the relationship between police and communities of color. KALW’s News Director Ben Trefny sat down with Chief Kirkpatrick to ask her about what that means for Oakland.

KIRKPATRICK: We are not going to compromise with the Oakland Police Department with anyone who does not have a heart for service.
