Connecting the Dots: Afternoon edition for Tuesday, April 17, 2012

The Assembly Committee on Public Safety has rejected a bill that would make it a felony for teachers to date students, voting it down 3-0. The bill was incited by the much publicized case of a 41-year-old-teacher in Modesto leaving his wife and three children to move in with an 18-year-old student. Republican Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen of Modesto pledged to keep pushing for similar legislation...

This year, every University of California campus, except for Berkeley, saw a rise in out-of-state and international admissions. The system accepted an all-time record of 80,289 freshman for the upcoming fall, with 18, 846 students from outside of California -- a 43 percent increase from the 13,144 last year...

The teen who was killed in a triple shooting in the Bayview neighborhood over the weekend has been identified as 17-year-old Jaquan Morton. Morton was shot in the chest on Friday night, along with two other teenage victims who are expected to survive. This shooting marks the 20th homicide in San Francisco this year...

On Friday, April 20, a selection subcommittee will recommend Anschutz Entertainment group for a five-year contract to operate the Oakland Coliseum complex. The Oakland Coliseum has been managed by SMG, a sports and entertainment company, for the past 13 years. AEG owns 100 facilities globally, including the Staples Center and L.A. Live entertainment district in Los Angeles, on which Oakland has based its plans for a development that would replace the aging Coliseum complex...

Citizens in the Richmond district have filed a number of complaints regarding Larry Flynt's Hustler Club truck, which has been parked at 37th and Balboa for over a month -- a location very close to the Anza Branch Library and an elementary school. In response,  Supervisor Eric Mar has recently had the truck towed for expired tags.
