CIVIC: The latest in the 60-year fight over abortion in SF

This episode: Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, anti-abortion activists have escalated efforts to shut down access to reproductive care — even in progressive cities like San Francisco.

Civic looks at how local abortion providers are facing new threats, including armed intrusions and social media-fueled clinic invasions. We also explore how city officials and advocates are fighting back with legislation, ballot measures like Proposition O, and a renewed push for reproductive justice.

We trace San Francisco’s deep-rooted history in this struggle — from the 1960s San Francisco Nine case to today's frontline battles — and hear from those working to ensure the city remains a safe haven for abortion access. This story was reported by Sylvie Sturm.

Civic is the flagship radio program and podcast from the San Francisco Public Press. It engages listeners with civic life by approaching San Francisco’s inner workings from the standpoint of curious stakeholders — whether they are residents, workers, visitors or otherwise connected to the city. It asks smart questions and takes an investigative approach to the stories people might wish were in the news more often. Civic aims to inspire and empower listeners to become involved in making sure their city works for them.
