Sights & Sounds: Valerie Troutt's Picks

Pete Rosos
Singer Valerie Troutt

Sights and Sounds is your weekly guide the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. During the pandemic, we're offering suggestions for ways to experience art and culture from home and at social distance spaces. This week, host Jenee Darden speaks with jazz and R&B vocalist Valerie Troutt

Samara Atkins' 30-min Dance Party

Samara is a Bay Area dancer, artivist and teacher who specializes in hip hop. She’s choreographed for several local acts including The Alphabet Rockers and Mix’d Ingredients. Get your body moving to rap, rock and other sounds when she leads a 30-min dance party on Instagram Live.

House/Full of Black Women
This ritual-performance project addresses the issues of displacement and sex trafficking of Black women and girls in Oakland. Their performances usually happen in public spaces around Oakland, but they've moved online. Visit their website to see their striking images and videos.

Pianist Tammy L. Hall Online Concerts
Tammy L. Hall must be a pandemic favorite because several Sights & Sounds guests have suggested her Thursday performances on Facebook. Tammy is a Bay Area treasure who has shared the stage with esteemed artists such as Etta James, Mary Wilson and Miki Howard. Her music is a wonderful fusion of jazz, classical and gospel. Watch her live every Thursday on Facebook. Just search for Tammy Lynne Hall. Donations are welcome.

Valerie Troutt's new album is The Oakland Girl. Get it now on Bandcamp.
