Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. Choreographer and Executive Director of KulArts Alleluia Panis told KALW’s Jeneé Darden about three fantastic arts events happening around the Bay this weekend.

The Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center presents Passionate Engagement; a retrospective exhibit from visual artist Nancy Hom’s 45-year career. The exhibition features Hom’s iconic silkscreens and an evolving mandala installation. It will run in conjunction with programs that include artist talks with Nancy, poetry readings, performances, and panel discussions. Passionate Engagement is running thru March at the Luggage Store in San Francisco.

KPFA Radio is hosting a screening of Defender -A Film on the Criminal Injustice System to honor the life and legacy of the late San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi. The film was co-directed by Adachi. It follows a case he defended to examine racial inequities in the criminal justice system. The screening is this Sunday at The New Parkway Theatre in Oakland and includes a post-film Q&A. Half of the ticket proceeds will go toward the Jeff Adachi Legacy Fund.

The 34th Annual Empowering Womxn of Color Conference is this Saturday. This year’s theme is “Rooted + Rising: Preserving Intergenerational Knowledge, Fostering Revolutionary Possibilities.” This is one of the longest-running conferences in the nation that addresses the needs and concerns of women of color. There will be workshops, guest speakers and panel discussions throughout the day. It all begins at 8:00 am on March 16th at the Pauley Ballroom on the UC Berkeley campus.
