Programming Changes Starting June 15

Dear Listeners,

As we approach our 80th anniversary in 2021, we’re taking a deep look at who we are as a news outlet and as a Bay Area arts and culture organization. We’re thinking about how we can be stronger, more inclusive, and more forward-thinking with programming that highlights and challenges systemic inequalities.

Can we do better at KALW? We believe that’s always possible.

Starting June 15, you will notice changes in our schedule as we continue to elevate the voices we feel are important as KALW enters a new chapter. We’ll be adding the CBC’s Podcast Playlist hosted by Nana aba Duncan, WFMT’s Fiesta!, a celebration of Latino concert music hosted by Elbio Barilari, and Fifth Floorhosted by David Amanor, a program that features stories from over 40 of the BBC’s international language services.

We’ve also moved many programs, and, yes, cancelled a few in order to tighten our budget and make room for the programs mentioned above.

Day 6Sound Opinionsand Conversations from the World Cafe will be leaving our schedule this month. We know that program hosts are best friends to many, especially while in quarantine at home! We’d like to thank you for your listenership and let you know the latest episodes of these programs can be found online.

Our new schedule reduces delays and rebroadcasts, allowing us to air the freshest content as it becomes available. Because of the pandemic, it has been necessary to change our programing more than usual and we thank you for your patience as we continue to work with fewer staff onsite.

We’ll post a downloadable grid of our new schedule at kalw.org soon. For now, here are some of the big changes:

  • As It Happens moves to 11pm, Mon-Thurs

  • BBC Newshour moves to 12pm, Mon-Fri and will now be aired live from London, rather than as a rebroadcast

  • Music From Other Minds is now one hour longer, 10pm-12am, Fridays

  • q moves to 7pm Mon-Fri

  • WFMT’s Fiesta! debuts Mondays at 8pm

  • CBC’s Podcast Playlist debuts at 11am on Saturdays

  • BBC’s Fifth Floor debuts at 2pm on Fridays

The complete list of changes is located here

Thank you for your loyal listenership,

Tina Pamintuan, General Manager
