Philosophy Talk: The Challenges of an Aging Population

"Old People in the Street" by Titoy used under CC license

What are the demographic dangers and challenges of a world awash in old folks?

All over the world, people are living longer and having fewer children than ever before. In less than two decades, one fifth of the US population will be over 65 years old. So what do these radically changed demographics mean for how we re-imagine the shape of a human life? Should we think of the rapidly increasing older population as a blessing or a burden? And what kinds of changes should we make – both individually and as a society – to adjust to this new world awash with old folks? John and Ken remain young at heart with Laura Carstensen, Director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, in a program recorded live as part of the Bay Area Science Festival. Sunday 8/28 at 10 am and Tuesday 8/30 at 12 noon.
