How Much Does COVID-19 Treatment Cost If You’re Uninsured or Underinsured?

Hospital clinicians work to test patients for the coronavirus in Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts on March 18, 2020.

On this edition of Your Call, we’re discussing how much it costs to get treated for COVID-19, especially for those of us who are underinsured or uninsured.

A TIME Magazine story found one uninsured woman’s testing and treatment cost her nearly $35,000. On March 18, Donald Trump signed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, making testing for coronavirus free to the public, but treatment is not covered. A new analysis from the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that the average cost of treatment for someone with insurance could be about $9,763 – and if there are complications, it could be about $20,292. How much will it cost for 27 million uninsured Americans?
