Daniel B. Summerhill on 'Black Joy' and teaching the next generation of Oakland poets

Poet and college professor Daniel B. Summerhill grew up in Oakland and first picked took an interest in creative writing when he was in high school. Since then, Daniel has performed spoken word all over the world and he’s helping the next generation of Bay Area wordsmiths find their voices.

His recent ten-week writing workshop for young black men in Oakland explored what it means to be young and black in today’s day and age. A collection of their work from that class was recently published in the new book "Black Joy: An Anthology of Black Boy Poems."

Daniel B. Summerhill will be performing live at the Emmanuel Temple Apostolic Church in Vallejo on July 19.
