The Glass and Zagg fires in Sonoma, Napa, and Shasta county have burned tens of thousands of acres, taking with them homes and infrastructure. 70,000 people have been ordered to evacuate.

Yesterday Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency in these three counties. It authorizes the state to direct all its personnel and equipment to help fight the fires there.

And Newsom submitted a request to President Trump for federal assistance grants to fight the fires raging across the state. Newsom said in the request that the fires are stretching the state’s resources, at a time when resources were already impacted by the pandemic. This is the second request by Newsom for federal assistance to fight fires. The first request was approved by the President in august.

My pronouns are he/him. I’m originally from San Diego, but moved to Santa Cruz for college in 2014, where I studied literature and creative nonfiction at UCSC. In 2018, I moved to Oakland and began to pursue a career in audio-journalism. I’ve worked as a reporter for KPFA for the last year, where I’ve covered a wide range of issues from climate change to prison lawsuits to political candidacies to policing in the bay area. I’m interested in telling stories that demystify systemic inequalities, whether those be gender, race, or class based.
