The Timber Fire in the Big Sur and Ventana Wilderness area of Monterey County kept growing on Sunday, expanding to more than 12,000 acres.
Cal Fire said that more than two weeks after the blaze started it is only 25% contained.
Expanded evacuation orders were issued by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office for residents as the fire expanded eastward overnight Saturday into Sunday and was threatening to move north of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.
Residents in the seven evacuation zones were ordered to leave yesterday by the Sheriff's Office. And evacuation warnings were issued for residents in 10 other zones.
Cal Fire said yesterday morning that fire crews were working on establishing contingency lines on the southwest edge of the fire near State Highway 1 to prepare for the possibility it could jump the Coast Ridge and spread toward the ocean. So far, the blaze has pushed eastward into the wilderness.
There were about 530 structures threatened as of yesterday afternoon.
More than 1,200 firefighters from multiple agencies were assigned to the fire at that time.
