Weekend Go-Tos for December 2, 2016

Party with Creative Growth artists at their open studio celebration tonight.

A few of KALW’s picks on what to do around the Bay Area this weekend.

Creative Growth, the Oakland-based non-profit supporting artists with disabilities, are throwing a lively open house celebration tonight. Artists will be on-hand, showing and selling their work, inspired by the winter season. There will also be beer, tacos, and crepes from local businesses, plus live music from The Creole Belles. Festivities kick off at 5:30, and last until 9:00 p.m. at the Creative Growth Art Center, 355 24th Street in Oakland. Find out more at creativegrowth.org.

This Saturday, Strut on Castro Street will celebrate Cleve Jone's new book, "When We Rise."

This week, activist and lecturer Cleve Jones, released his autobiography When We Rise, which chronicles his personal experience during the AIDs epidemic, as well as his co-founding of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, and conception of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. You’re invited to the book’s launch party, happening on Saturday at Strut on Castro Street in San Francisco, hosted by Juanita More. There will be dancing, eating, and drinking, and signed copies of When We Rise will be available for purchase. The party lasts from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and full details can be found at strutsf.org.

Lastly, if you’re dying to feel just a little snow on your skin, but can’t travel too far, on Sunday, Mill Valley will bring the cold, flaky goods to its annual Winterfest. Everyone is invited to the town’s center to take part in winter-themed arts and crafts, live music, and games, and even a hill of snow that kids can slide down. The fun begins at 11:00 a.m. and will continue until their tree lighting at sundown.

Is there an event happening this weekend that you'd like folks to know about? Feel free to add it below in the comments section or add it to the KALW Community Calendar.
