Marga Gomez on playing her father on stage

Marga Gomez in her one-person show, "Latin Standards"

For writer, performer, and comedian Marga Gomez, becoming an entertainer was somewhat of a rite of passage.

The three-time “Best of the Bay” Comedian Award winner is the daughter of Cuban entertainer Willie Chevalier. He was a songwriter and influential comedian in New York City during the 1950's. In the return of her solo show "Latin Standards," Marga pays tribute to her late father on the stage by recreating scenes from her childhood and explores the connections between her Dad’s life as a comedian and her own journey coming up in the San Francisco stand-up scene in the mid-1980s. Marga stopped by KALW to share what it was like growing up as the daughter of entertainers and discusses playing her father on the stage.

"My job is to find the simplest way to convey the complex and frustrating challenges that we go through in life."

You can catch Marga Gomez in her one-person show “Latin Standards” at The Marsh in Berkeley beginning October 5 and running thru Nov 17.
