Your Call: Toxic chemicals in cosmetics

On the March 7th edition of Your Call, we'll have a conversation with filmmakers Erica Jordan and Dianne Griffin, as well as Janet Nudelman from the Breast Cancer Fund. They join us for a conversation on Erica and Dianne's new documentary Painted Nails and the cosmetic industry.

Painted Nails tells the story of Mission District salon owner Van Hoang and her efforts to bring awareness to toxic chemicals in cosmetics and personal products. Like many salon workers, Van is experiencing the affects of the toxic chemicals on her health. The current United States federal law on cosmetics, established in 1938, allows the 50 billion dollar industry to put unlimited amounts of chemicals into personal care products with no required testing, monitoring of health effects, or labeling requirements.

How much do we know about the contents of our cosmetics? Where is the Safe Cosmetics Act now? How can we protect salon workers and ourselves?
