The Spot: Sky's the Limit

Frances Green, Margaret (Peg) Kirchner, Ann Waldner and Blanche Osborn leaving their plane, "Pistol Packin' Mama."

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

"The WASPs: Women Pilots of WWII," produced by Radio Diaries, originally aired in 2002.

"Fifi," the mascot of WASP, designed by Walt Disney.

A few months ago, I went sifting through the Bay Area’s naval history at the Alameda Naval Air Museum, and there was one item I saw during my visit that boggled me. I had never seen it before. It was the logo for WASPs, Women Airforce Service Pilots.

FromRadiotopia’sRadio Diaries, this is the story of WASP as told by the pilots themselves. Listen to dozens more stories from Radio Diaries by subscribing to their podcast, or listen to their backlog at radiodiaries.org.

Sally Ride on Dumb Questions,” from The Experimenters series by Blank on Blank, February 2016.

In 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman to enter space. While much has changed in the 30 plus years since Ride made history, her unearthed interview with Gloria Steinem highlights the fact that some things sadly haven't changed. From the PBS series and podcast Blank on Blank, here’s an edited version of that original interview.

If you want to hear more archival interviews, subscribe to Blank on Blank, on iTunes or Stitcher, and watch their video series on YouTube.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super RainbowBenny Goodman, Amiina, and The Eternal Twilight.

If you have a suggestion for a podcast or an audio project we should feature, please drop us a line at thespot@kalw.org.

Tune in next week for another episode of The Spot, only on KALW San Francisco.
