Significant Other @ SF Playhouse - Mamma Mia! @ Hillbarn - Red Joan - Wild Nights with Emily
This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the performing arts in the San Francisco Bay Area, host David Latulippe talks with Bay Area theater artist Lauren English, who directs the ‘unromantic romantic comedy’ Significant Other, which runs at San Francisco Playhouse (450 Post St.) through June 15.
Written by award-winning playwright Joshua Harmon (Bad Jews, Admissions), the 2015 Broadway play Significant Other is an unorthodox rom-com about Jordan Berman, who is looking for his own “Mr. Right”. While his close group of girlfriends is getting married one by one, he is left to wonder why life won’t give him the same fairytale ending.
From the new production of the musical Mamma Mia! at Hillbarn Theatre in Foster City, we talk with New York-based actress Merrill Peiffer, who plays Donna, and was also on the national touring production of the musical; and with San Jose resident Christine Capsuto-Shulman, who plays Tanya. Mamma Mia! runs through May 26 at Hillbarn Theatre (1285 East Hillsdale Blvd.) in Foster City.
Plus, Open Air’s regular contributor and critic at large, Peter Robinson, reviews the new movies Red Joan, with Judy Dench, the true story of Joan Stanley, who was exposed as the KGB's longest-serving British spy; and also Wild Nights with Emily, in which Molly Shannon captures the vivacious, irreverent side of writer/poet Emily Dickinson that was covered up for years - most notably Emily's lifelong romantic relationship with another woman (Susan Ziegler).
Open Air with host David Latulippe; heard live on Thursday, May 9, at 1pm. Listen now or anytime…
