This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the performing arts in the San Francisco Bay Area, host David Latulippe talks with composer Mason Bates (pictured, left) and with choral conductor Ragnar Bohlin (right), about the new cd by Bohlin’s ensemble Cappella SF, titled Mass Transmission - Choral Works by Mason Bates.
Two complete works are presented on this new album. Mass Transmission (2012, for organ, electronics, and chorus) was originally written for the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and receives its world premiere recording on this cd. The other composition, Sirens, dates from 2009 and is written for 12-part a cappella chorus.
Writer and performer Paul Sussman stops by to share details about his solo show The Wrong Kind of Pessimism, currently at The Marsh in San Francisco, through May 18. In the show, Sussman explores human progress over the last few millennia, from Neanderthal times to the present, post-Trump-election era. In the process he takes on (and smacks down!) the big questions of Progress, Faith and Where it All Ends. The Marsh is located at 1062 Valencia Street in San Francisco.
Plus, returning to KALW is internationally known Kathak dancer Farah Yasmeen Shaikh who will be making her first solo appearance in the Bay Area in 5 years with Nazaakat aur Taaqat — A Delicate Power. Her series of eight dances is accompanied by an ensemble of the Bay Area’s finest musicians specializing in the classical music of South Asia, including the prodigious talents of violinist Raaginder Singh Momi, who will be joining the conversation.
The performance is on Saturday, May 4 (5:30pm) at the Mexican Heritage Museum (1700 Alum Rock Ave) in San Jose.
