‘Grandma’ @ ODC Theater ~ Lucia Berlin: Stories ~ ‘Bootstrap Tales’ by Robert Moses ~ Ancient Greeks

This week on Open Air, KALW's radio magazine about the Bay Area performing arts, host David Latulippe talks with ODC Theater's new artistic director, Julie Potter, about the Theater's 2018 Season, which starts off with three performances of ‘Grandma’, a ‘live televisual, set in an American landscape of Twinkies and Wonderbread’, by New York artist Cori Olinghouse, who will also join the conversation. ‘Grandma’ runs February 15 - 17, 8pm at ODC Theater, 3153 17th Street in San Francisco.

Also in the KALW studios are Susan Harloe, co-artistic director of Performing Arts Company Word for Word, and composer Marcus Shelby, to discuss the first production of Word for Word’s 25th Anniversary Season: Lucia Berlin: Stories, which runs from February 14 - March 11, at Z Below Theater in San Francisco. The production features five stories from Berlin’s posthumous publication A Manual for Cleaning Women, which illuminate her insightful, compassionate view of American society, set to an evocative jazz score by Marcus Shelby.

From Robert Moses’ Kin, we meet with choreographer Robert Moses, to talk about his Dance Company’s 23d Home Season, featuring the world premiere of Bootstrap Tales. This new work is inspired by the Company’s outreach initiative, The Bootstrap Program, designed to engage San Francisco foster youth in the process of creating a life in the arts. The production will feature musicians whose primary performance venues are the streets of San Francisco. February 23 - 25 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, 701 Mission Street, San Francisco.

Plus, Peter Robinson, Open Air’s regular contributor and critic at large, reviews the movie Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, a biographical romantic drama film directed by Paul McGuigan and starring Annette Bening and Jamie Bell; and he introduces lectures at Humanities West about the Ancient Greeks, at the Marine’s Memorial Theatre in San Francisco, on February 23 and 24.

Open Air with host David Latulippe; heard live on Thursday, February 15 at 1pm. Listen now or anytime…
