Summer of Soul Revisited

210705_r38616.jpeg

A documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival will be shown this Saturday at the Castro Theatre.

With extraordinary footage that was shot at the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival in Mount Morris Park placed alongside contemporary interviews of musicians and attendees, Summer of Soul offers a multitude of incandescent moments, including Mahalia Jackson sharing the stage with Mavis Staples, Stevie Wonder playing drums, Sly and the Family Stone bringing down the house, and emcee Tony Lawrence’s vibrant outfits threatening to steal the show. If you can't make it to the screening, tune in Saturday 8-10 pm as host Devon Strolovitch plays some of the music featured in the film.
