Troy Chew

Troy Chew brings unique style to the canvas. His artwork is Black urban and African Diaspora cultures meets European painting traditions. He talks about how hip hop and Black American slang inspire his work.Troy grew up in Southern California, where he wasn’t formally trained in art. In fact, one teacher tried to discourage him from painting. But that didn’t stop Troy from fulfilling his passion. After moving up to the Bay Area he earned a master's degree from California College of the Arts. Troy is an award-winning artist. His paintings have been featured in exhibits around the Bay Area.

[Black People] have this metaphorical way of speaking when we create slang so I decided to create a visual lexicon and put it into a painting.
