Unearthing the cultural history of San Francisco's Mission District

"San Francisco-Mission District" by CC Flickr user emile lombard, resized and recropped

San Francisco’s Mission District has a historically rich Mexican heritage.

It’s also home to Chileans, Cubans, Guatemalans, Puerto Ricans, and others, never representing just one single Latino identity. Author Cary Cordova explores the cultural history of the community in her book “The Heart of the Mission.”

"In the Mission District ... artists saw the ways in which painting a wall could establish a kind of territory, establish a kind of presence of who is living in the area, and also could maybe reach and radicalize some of the residents and encourage them to think about how to get involved in the community."
