Fremont high school student honored as one of nation's top environmentalists

Fremont high school student Lynnea Shuck is being honored as one of the nation's top environmentalists. She and five others will receive the Brower Youth Award from the Earth Island Institute. The award is named after David Brower, an environmentalist who helped create the Point Reyes National Seashore and other nature preserves around the state and country.

Shuck created a Junior Ranger Program at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Alviso. And she's made a "how-to" guide to help the country's 554 other wildlife refuges start their own. She joined KALW’s Ben Trefny in our studio to talk about her passion for the environment.

I really want to empower the young people. To show them that this is their future – this is their world – and they can do something about it.

I joined KALW in 2003. As Executive News Editor and then News Director, I helped our news department win numerous regional and national awards for long- and short-form journalism. I've also helped create numerous training programs — for teenagers, incarcerated people, and early-career journalists — and have taught hundreds of audio producers. I served as interim Executive Director for nearly two years. My work is currently focused on creating original live events, programming, and building partnerships with like-minded organizations.
