This Thursday night, Paul McCartney will close the show at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. It will be the final public event at the storied stadium. This week, we’re looking back at the defining memories of the park.

Today, KALW morning announcer, Joe Burke – a born-and-raised San Franciscan and a die-hard 49ers and Giants fan – reflects on attending Giants games as a child.

BURKE: There's nothing like walking into the ballpark as you come out of the stands, and the doors open up, and then there's the field in front of you. It's a very special experience. And Candlestick was that for many, many years. As miserably cold as it was, and as many times as it cost us games, or chances at the playoffs, and that sort of things, it still was home.

I joined KALW in 2004. As Executive News Editor and then News Director, I helped our news department win numerous regional and national awards for long- and short-form journalism. I've also helped create numerous training programs — for teenagers, incarcerated people, and early-career journalists — and have taught hundreds of audio producers. I served as interim Executive Director for nearly two years. My work is currently focused on creating original live events, programming, and building partnerships with like-minded organizations.
