BAY AGENDA with Artist Raymundo Valdez

All this week, we are featuring conversations that matter from our series, The Bay Agenda, recorded live at KALW’s community events space in downtown San Francisco.

Today’s show features artist Raymundo Valdez. His first solo exhibition, PRISMATIC CITY: LANDMARKS IN LIGHT, is on view now through April 10th in the Gallery at KALW’S event space at 220 Montgomery Street in downtown San Francisco. He’s joined by KALW Executive Producer Ben Trefny.

In his artist statement, Raymundo writes…

This show is deeply personal to me. Prismatic City is my exploration of San Francisco; not as a postcard image, but as a place I live in, walk through, and experience every day. The landmarks in these paintings aren’t distant monuments. They’re part of my daily life.

Working in oil on canvas, I reinterpret these familiar structures through my signature diamond-like fractal style, breaking them into luminous planes of color and rhythm. These works are shaped by real moments: walking the streets, watching fog move across the skyline, and observing how light shifts from morning to dusk and into night.

At its heart, this exhibition is about connection. I hope these paintings bring recognition, warmth, and a reminder of what we love about San Francisco. If a piece sparks a memory or creates a quiet moment of happiness, then I’ve done what I set out to do.

Prismatic City reflects how the city is lived. Layered, luminous, and constantly changing.
