J School Stories: Local Musicians Breaking Ground

This week, we are proud to share stories from the students in the audio program at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. These pieces were produced during the 2023 - 2024 school year.

In this episode, we’ll hear three stories about California musical acts that are breaking rules and new ground.

  • Bella Arnold tries to make sense of Mac Sabbath, a band that’s a wild mashup of McDonald’s characters and Black Sabbath
  • Holly Burns catches up with a local musician who started playing on the streets nearly 50 years ago — and is still charming audiences throughout the Bay Area
  • Melanie Velasquez introduces Seref Ha'Qol, the saxophonist of Uncle Chris, a San Francisco-based alternative-indie-jazz band that may be on the cusp of stardom
