Gay Chorus Deep South: Five Years Later

In 2017, after the election of Donald Trump and the increase in anti-gay violence and initiatives, the Chorus decided to go on the road and try to change some hearts and minds in the South.

A small documentary film crew joined the over 300 singers on their tour across Mississippi, Tennessee, the Carolinas, Alabama. And, in 2019, Gay Chorus, Deep South premiered to raves at the Tribeca FIlm Festival.

Five years later, as Donald Trump is once again on the ballot, the chorus and filmmakers came together to discuss what has changed and why they are planning to head back to Red State America this fall.

After a screening of the film, Chorus Artistic Director Jacob Sternberg moderated a panel that included Former Artistic Director Tim Seelig, Chorus CEO Chris Verdugo, Chorus Member Julian Hornik, as well as the film’s Director David Charles Rodrigues and its Producer Bud Johnston.

This conversation was recorded live at the Chan National Queer Arts Center on April 11, 2024.
