Settlements Underscore Damage Done In Housing Crash
Some of the biggest banks in the country have agreed to pay more than $18 billion to settle allegations of wrongdoing in their mortgage lending. And in a separate settlement, 10 banks agreed to pay more than $8 billion to settle claims they made errors in foreclosing on people's homes.

The chances of an immigration overhaul bill getting through the Senate greatly improved on Thursday. A deal was reached on a border security plan. Gays often lack the kind of support from adult children or other family members that prevents people from sliding into homelessness. In San Francisco, they are twice as likely to be homeless as straights, indicative of a problem in major cities nationwide.
